Update 10 December 2020
The Cryospa remains closed until further notice.
The use of cold therapy (cryotherapy) dates back to the Ancient Greeks, and since the 1940's cold has been used extensively for the treatment of acute and sub-acute injuries and for rehabilitation.
Cryospa has both therapeutic and preventative effects. It cools injured tissues and intramuscular temperatures can be reduced significantly, which aids in the reduction of local metabolism, inflammation and pain. It is commonly used for post-exercise recovery.
The new Ards Cryospa can be found on the ground floor in Londonderry Park. The Spa is in its own room adjacent to changing facilities and can accommodate up to three users at a time. The water temperature is set at 7 degrees celcius with sessions lasting for a maximum of 10 minutes.
Bookings can be made now by calling Londonderry Park on 028 9181 0614.
Benefits of Cryospa
The main benefits of using a Cryospa are:
- Improve your energy
- Aid recovery
- Reduce injury
- Increase performance
These are achieved through four basic elements of the spa:
Turbulence - the aeration of water achieves a greater temperature drop faster and the massage effect influences dispersal of fluids and can also stimulate the muscle.
Temperature - the cold reduces pain and muscle spasm, tissue metabolism, blood flow (initially), inflammation, edema and connective tissue extensibility. Low temperature (1 C to 14 C) hydrotherapy can provide significant pain relief with a low side-effect profile.
Pressure - deeper water provides a greater pressure on tissues which helps to disperse accumulated fluids.
Salinity - use of salt helps disperse fluid from around an injury and can also cleanse cuts and wounds.
Prices and Medical Screening
Cryospa sessions last for 10 minutes.
Up to 3 people can use it at one time depending on the level of immersion required.
Price: 1 person £8, 2 people £12, 3 people £15. Team bookings are available costing £50 for 60 minutes for up to 15 people.
Medical Screening Questionnaire - due to the nature of Cryospa, all users must complete the Medical Screening Questionnaire. Please download and complete the form before making your booking.
